Global tech giant Google has announced a massive $15 billion investment in India over the next five years to set up its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in the country. The new facility, located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, will be one of Google’s largest AI and data infrastructure centers worldwide, marking a major milestone in India’s digital growth journey.
According to the company, the Google AI hub in India will include gigawatt-scale data center operations, robust energy infrastructure, and a significantly expanded fiber-optic network. The move highlights Google’s increasing commitment to positioning India as a global AI innovation and technology hub.
Google’s $15 Billion AI Investment: A Major Boost for India’s Digital Ecosystem
The $15 billion AI investment plan underscores Google’s long-term confidence in India’s digital economy and its growing role as a hub for AI talent and innovation. This initiative is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global artificial intelligence race and accelerate the nation’s digital transformation goals.
The investment will also support the construction of a new international subsea gateway, which will connect India to Google’s extensive global network of over 2 million miles (3.2 million kilometers) of terrestrial and subsea cables. This will not only enhance data connectivity and cloud infrastructure but also improve access to advanced AI tools and computing resources for businesses and developers across the country.
“This initiative creates substantial economic and societal opportunities for both India and the United States, while pioneering a generational shift in AI capability,” Google said in its official statement.
Sundar Pichai: AI Hub Will Accelerate Innovation in India
Google CEO Sundar Pichai, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said the new AI hub would enable India to play a defining role in the global AI ecosystem.
“Through this AI hub, we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country,” Pichai said.
He added that the investment would foster collaboration between Indian developers, startups, and global research teams, allowing AI-driven innovations to emerge in areas such as healthcare, education, sustainability, and agriculture.
The AI hub will serve as a base for research, training, and development of advanced machine learning models and cloud-based AI tools that can be deployed across industries.
Prime Minister Modi Welcomes Google’s Vision for ‘AI for All’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Google’s investment, calling it a significant step toward realizing India’s vision of becoming a developed, technology-driven economy.
“This will be a powerful force in democratizing technology,” Modi said. “It ensures AI for all — delivering cutting-edge tools to our citizens, boosting our digital economy, and securing India’s place as a global technology leader.”
Modi and Pichai also discussed how the AI hub could contribute to India’s digital public infrastructure, skill development, and AI governance framework to ensure responsible and inclusive use of emerging technologies.
Partnership with Adani Group for Infrastructure Development
Indian conglomerate Adani Group confirmed that it has partnered with Google to co-develop and manage the AI and data infrastructure for the Visakhapatnam hub. The partnership will focus on building sustainable and energy-efficient facilities powered by renewable energy sources.
This collaboration aligns with India’s national agenda to promote green data centers and reduce the carbon footprint of the country’s growing digital economy.
Transforming India into a Global AI Powerhouse
Google’s investment is expected to create thousands of high-skill jobs, spur foreign direct investment (FDI), and catalyze innovation across India’s expanding tech ecosystem. The hub will serve as a bridge connecting Indian startups, enterprises, and developers with global AI infrastructure and research networks.
Industry experts view this move as a turning point for India’s digital infrastructure. With growing global competition in AI from the U.S., China, and Europe, Google’s Visakhapatnam hub could firmly establish India as a key player in global AI research, development, and deployment.
